Postdoctoral Investigator

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Woods Hole, MA

The Physical Oceanography Department is searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join their team. This position will be for 18 months. This is a full-time position and will be eligible for benefits.

JOB SUMMARY:

The successful candidate will contribute to a project that aims to reconstruct and compare past ocean circulation (as derived from sparse geochemical data collected from fossils in deep sea sedimentary cores) with modern ocean circulation (as constructed from modern oceanographic observations and computer simulations). The work will yield insight into the differences and processes governing ocean circulation throughout the last glacial cycle from 150,000 years ago to the present. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team of computer scientists, physical oceanographers, paleoceanographers, and computational geophysicists to address these challenges (see https://www.whoi.edu/page.do?pid=81596 for more information). We are developing an innovative suite of computational tools to explore past changes in global ocean circulation by allowing researchers to interact with data in a 3-dimensional environment across a geologically relevant time domain (the 4th dimension). To accomplish these goals, the research project takes advantage of the unique analytical resources and interdisciplinary collaborative environment provided by the UC Davis KeckCAVES (W. M. Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences), including the use of immersive interactive visualization technologies that help scientists identify meaningful patterns in complex datasets.

To apply please combine your Research Statement and 3 references with your CV into one PDF document and upload.

EDUCATION DESIRED:

Ph.D with experience in one or more of the following: physical oceanography, paleoceanography, numerical modeling and inverse modeling

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to a mostly sedentary position. Physical duties are subject to change.
