DARK, Niels Bohr Institute Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

Applicants are invited for a postdoctoral research position in observational multiwavelength studies ofactive galactic nuclei (AGN) at research section DARK at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. The postdoc will work with Prof. Marianne Vestergaard and her research team. The position is part of a larger effort to understand the black hole powered central engine of AGN and will primarily focus on analysis of observations of a changing-look AGN. There is a possibility to also work on other projects with the team, including interferometric and single-dish (sub-)mm observations of AGN and analysis and modeling of infrared-optical-UV IFU/spectroscopic data of AGN and distant quasars, and/or to work on the candidate's own research.

Candidates with a strong background in observational astrophysics of galaxies and/or AGN are encouraged to apply. Specific experience with radio and millimeter interferometry and successful experience writing telescope observing proposals for any wavelength regime are both considered strong assets. However, significant experience with handling of data in any subfield is also an asset. Other assets could be significant experience analyzing large multiwavelength data sets (radio, infrared, optical, UV and possibly X-rays) and experience developing software code to model observational data.

The postdoc's duties will include (a) calibration and analysis of telescope data (primarily radio, mm, infrared/optical, UV and possibly X-ray data), (b) write and apply software code for data analysis and modeling, simulations, and to assess the statistical significance of results; (c) write applications for telescope time and prepare observations, as needed; (d) organize, expand and maintain the observational multiwavelength database; (e) write scientific papers on project results; (f) organize and run local team meetings and more generally contribute to an interactive and inspiring work place. The post may also include performance of other tasks, such as helping run DARK journal club and organize Cake talks.

Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to develop ownership of their projects and will receive support to travel to international conferences and visit collaborators. Co-mentoring of students is encouraged and there will be options to teach, if desired. Postdocs are encouraged to engage in and help shape local scientific and social activities.

DARK's areas of research include, but are not limited to: observations, simulations and theory of astrophysical transients and cosmic explosions (including tidal disruption events and supernovae), galactic dynamics, neutrino astrophysics, high-redshift galaxies, fundamental cosmology, dark matter and dark energy, black holes and AGN, and cosmic dust.

DARK is committed to excellence through diversity and strives to establish a climate that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes respect for the contributions of all students and employees. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to background, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or age. DARK strives to facilitate the progress of underrepresented groups in higher education careers and strongly encourages these candidates to apply.

Further information on the DARK and NBI is linked at https: // www. science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position and DARK can be made to Prof Marianne Vestergaard (mvester@nbi.dk) and to secretary, Meagan K Jensen (meagan.kelsey@nbi.ku.dk).

Funding is available for up to three years. Nominally, the position is for two years initially with a possibility of a one-year extension pending satisfactory performance. The position is open from 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The ideal profile:

· Has extensive experience calibrating and analyzing observations at one or more wavelength regions with the following priority: radio, millimeter, infrared, optical, UV, X-rays.

· Has proven ability to write successful telescope applications.

· Is committed to research excellence with a demonstrated relevant publication track record

· Has a proven ability to conduct independent research, as well as to work effectively as a member of a research team

· Has great command of English (working language)

· Has very good skills in communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management.

· Has an interest in mentoring students

The University wishes for our staff composition to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Salary, pension, and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). A supplement can be negotiated depending on qualifications. In addition to the basic salary a monthly contribution to a pension fund is added (17.1% of the salary).
