Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Galactic Archaeology

Macquarie University

PRIMARY DETAIL

• Salary Package: Level A step 6-8 (PhD) from $97,621 to $104,622 plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. • Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed term for 2 years with a possibility of further extension subject to funding. • Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus (North Ryde)

THE ROLE

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Galactic Archaeology to take part in the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5). The primary focus of the position will be the analysis and interpretation of the large (and growing) body of spectroscopic data on stellar streams in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the exploitation of ancillary data sets. The objective is to understand the properties of these streams and their progenitors in order to trace the accretion history of the Milky Way and the properties of its halo. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to take part in the ongoing S5 observational program.

We look forward to hearing from applicants who have demonstrated excellence in their past research, and who are keen to engage in a project that involves collaboration with academic partners at institutions across Australia and around the globe.

About Us

Macquarie University has established itself as one of the fastest-growing centres of astronomy research excellence in Australia, consistently holding a top ranking of ‘well above world standard' in the Excellence in Research for Australia national research evaluation framework since 2012. Astrophysics research at Macquarie is fostered by the University's Research Centre in Astrophysics and Space Technologies. Macquarie also hosts Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO), bringing significant expertise in the archiving and management of large astronomical data sets via the Data Central team. With regard to national and international ties, Macquarie is a node of ASTRO 3D, the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions, and is a full institutional member of the 4MOST consortium.

Macquarie University is situated in the leafy suburb of North Ryde, less than 30 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD, and bordering on the picturesque Lane Cove National Park. Sydney itself was ranked the world's third most liveable city by the Economist in 2019, and generally ranks in the top 10 of cities with the highest quality of living.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is a young and dynamic faculty driven by the spirit of discovery. Here we nurture the next generation of science and technology innovators. From a handful of students on the University's first day, the Faculty now serves nearly 8000 students across all our programs.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is an inclusive community in scientific collaboration. Mathematics and statistics drive breakthroughs in technology and data science, while physics and astronomy seek to understand matter and the Universe – everything from quarks to galaxy clusters. We collaborate closely with local, national, and international organisations and companies across the diverse mathematical and physical sciences fields. Further information about our school is available here.
