Position description

The Center for Coastal Climate Resilience (CCCR) at the UCSC Institute of Marine Sciences invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar who will work under the direction of Dr. Michael Beck. This position is jointly supported and advised by the CCCR and the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA). The CCCR-ORRAA Coastal Resilience Fellow will serve to advance joint strategies of the CCCR and ORRAA, which include some of the following:

The development of an adaptation market that supports investments in nature-based solutions (NBS) to reduce risks to people and property.

The application of the Coastal Risk Index, for example, by partners interested in reporting Climate and Nature Risks using standards being developed by Task Forces on Climate- and Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD, TNFD) or US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The incorporation of the values of NBS into national accounting in the US and abroad.

Working with the insurance industry to include nature in risk modeling and develop innovative insurance tools.

Working with disaster management agencies, such as FEMA, on directing hazard mitigation and disaster recovery funding to nature-based solutions.

This position requires the postdoctoral scholar to collaborate and successfully work as part of a large team, demonstrate intellectual independence and critical thinking, and contribute to the preparation of publications. As such, strong communication skills are an important asset to succeed in this role.

Applicants with expertise in coastal policy; climate risk analyses; national economics; risk models, insurance tools; and/or nature-based solutions are strongly encouraged to apply.
