Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

This new full time post is available from 1 September 2023 on a 24 month fixed term basis.

Summary of the role

The Faculty wishes to recruit either a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to participate in the Exposing The Nature Of Model Error In Weather And Climate Models project (NMEWCM). This Leverhulme funded post is available from 1 September 2023. The successful applicant will produce and analyse ensembles of numerical models that are specifically designed to quantify parametric and structural uncertainty due to unresolved processes in weather and climate predictions. The post holder will work closely with the Met Office Atmospheric Processes and Parametrisations group, and collaborate with the wider Model Uncertainty Model Intercomparison Project (MUMIP) led by the University of Oxford and including Meteo France and the US National Center for Atmospheric Research.

NMEWCM will perform coordinated experiments to quantify model error for four different single column atmospheric models (the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), the Unified Model (MetUM), ARPEGE-Climat and the FV3 Common Community Physics Package), evaluate the true diversity of current deterministic parametrisations, and assess the suitability and universality of widely used stochastic parametrisation schemes. The unique datasets we will produce will enable us to robustly quantify the systematic and random errors associated with model approximations using a variety of analysis techniques developed by the partners.

About you

The successful applicant will be expected to lead the development of research objectives, lead the writing of peer-reviewed publications and presentation of the work at international conferences (Grade E&F), and identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds (Grade F only). Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion of Grade E) in Meteorology, Climatology or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants are expected to have strong mathematical and computational skills.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
