About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Fellow to undertake team-based research in a high achieving, multidisciplinary and collaboration focused environment at the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR). The Institute's mission is to undertake transformational solution-focused research to address new and emerging challenges facing Australian society, with a particular focus on public policy, health, and education. ISSR is not a traditional academic organisational unit – it is largely self-funded with a strong focus on Category 2 and 3 contract research and Consultancy, which is used to build the workforce and support the research activity. All research staff are required to contribute to the contract research and Consultancy activities.

The position will work on a range of projects, beyond a narrow research specialisation, and primarily on externally commissioned research projects. These projects will be in multidisciplinary teams and often in collaboration with non-university stakeholders from government, industry, the not-for-profit sector and end-user communities. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will also contribute to service and engagement roles and activities.

Key responsibilities will include:

Academic Research Level A

Research

Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.

Undertake collaborative, research and evaluation projects within large multidisciplinary teams.

Contribute to the project management of small projects.

Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology, and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

Contribute to the production of high-quality research outputs, including the delivery of contract research reports for external partners and publishing in high quality journals.

Develop an emerging research profile aligned to the Institute's mission and research impact areas.

Teaching

Contribute to the development and delivery of methods courses if the opportunity arises.

Supervision and Researcher Development

Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

Demonstrate personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

Effectively lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Citizenship and Service

Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.

Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the Institute.

Provide support to other academic positions and Institute operations as needed during other team members absences.

Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

Begin to develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

Academic Research Level B

Research

Develop a collaborative, team-based research program aligned to the Institute's mission and research impact areas to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.

Produces quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications, and conference publications, with a lead role in some outputs.

Contribute as chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in applications for competitive research funding primarily through Category 2 and 3 sources, which includes actively seeking, obtaining, and managing research funding.

Work with colleagues in the development of joint research and evaluation projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

Contribute to progressing towards transfer of knowledge, technology, and practices to research end users through translation, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property.

Review and draw upon best practice and innovative research methodologies.

Teaching

Lead the development and delivery of methods courses if the opportunity arises.

Supervision and Researcher Development

Lead on the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.

Facilitate engagement opportunities for Higher Degree by Research students and other supervisees.

Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration, and active participation in priority activities for the Institute.

Provide support to other academic positions and Institute operations as needed during other team members absences.

Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

Actively pursue and develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies, and the wider community.

The position is located at the UQ Long Pocket Precinct only 10 minutes from the St Lucia campus, on Meiers Road, Indooroopilly (less than 10km from the Brisbane CBD). Free parking is available to staff on the Long Pocket site.

About You

Academic Level A

Completion or near completion of a PhD in a relevant field of social science or a cognate discipline with a component of quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and data management (e.g., sociology, social policy, health).

An emerging profile in research in the discipline area of social policy or health as it relates to vulnerable populations and communities; and/or policy or program evaluation.

Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining external research funding.

Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals, presenting at conferences, and non-traditional research outputs that are of high quality and impact.

Experience conducting high quality research projects, including project management, data collection, data management, data analysis, and reporting.

Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external activities.

Academic Level B

Completion of a PhD in a relevant field of social science or a cognate discipline with a component of quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and data management (e.g., sociology, social policy, health).

A growing profile in research in the discipline area of social policy or health as it relates to vulnerable populations and communities; and/or policy or program evaluation.

Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining, and managing external research funding, including Category 2 and 3 contract research or Consultancy.

Experience managing and/or conducting high quality research projects, including project management, data collection, data management, data analysis, and reporting.

A developing track record of publications in reputed refereed journals, conference presentations, and non-traditional research outputs that are of high quality and impact.

A growing record of supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students to successful completion.

Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.

What We Can Offer

We have two positions available, full-time, fixed term for up to 3 years at Academic Level A/B.

At Level A, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,308 - $99,426 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $86,941 - $116,329 per annum.

At Level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $104,579 - $124,187 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $122,358 - $145,299 per annum.
