Job description

Cell metabolism and autophagy in cancer

Prof Kevin Ryan

www. beatson.gla.ac.uk/kevinryan

The CRUK Beatson Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability, and integrity.

A postdoctoral position is offered in the Tumour Cell Death and Autophagy Laboratory (TCDAL) headed by Professor Kevin Ryan. The TCDAL is a vibrant team which aims to understand how cell viability is controlled during tumour development and in response to cancer therapy. We focus on cell metabolism, autophagy and apoptosis – pathways that control cell viability, tumour development and the response to cancer therapy. The successful applicant will use cell biology and genetics to investigate the mechanisms controlling cell viability with the aim of understanding tumour development and enhancing the application and effectiveness of cancer therapy.

Key recent publications from the group include: Sierra Gonzalez et al. Nature 563(7733):719-723; Sakamaki et al. Molecular Cell 66(4):517-543; Rosenfeldt et al. Nature 504(7479):296-30; Long et al. Molecular Cell 50(3):394-406;

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field, be ambitious and be driven by scientific curiosity. Existing skills with regard to mammalian cell culture and molecular biology are desired and experience or interest in in vivo cancer models would be an advantage.

To find out more about this unique opportunity to establish advanced skills and expertise in this exciting field please contact: Professor Kevin Ryan, k.ryan@beatson.gla.ac.uk.

The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute is committed to increase the number of female scientists at this level and encourages female applicants to apply. We have recently introduced a highly attractive maternity policy which provides 12-18 months support and funding for postdocs wishing to take time off to spend with their children.

Closing date for applications 30 January 2022.
