Postdoctoral Researcher: Environmental/Energy Economics (Full-Time), School of Business and Economics, NUI Galway (NUIG RES 223-21)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, 24 month, fixed-term contract position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics, at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Green Hysland’s project under the European Union’s Horizon 20 20 research and innovation (fuel-cell hydrogen) programme and the STEPS (Storage of energy and power systems) project under the EU Interreg North West Europe Programme. The position will be based in Economics at the National University of Ireland Galway and is available from 4th January 2022.

The successful candidate will work in Dr Thomas van Rensburg’s research group which examines the social and economic impact of renewable energy in Ireland and elsewhere in collaboration with a number of academic and industry groups in Ireland, the UK, Spain and in Africa.  In particular they will examine the role of hydrogen and battery storage as economic solutions to variable renewable energy power generation. The project aims to evaluate the economic and societal impact of hydrogen and battery storage end use technologies on relevant stakeholders using attitudinal survey and environmental valuation techniques. It also aims to inform the development of future policies concerned with battery storage and green hydrogen production and end use.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will conduct the following:

1. Significantly contribute to day to day project management of NUI Galway’s participation in STEPS and GreenHysland, including ongoing technical and financial reporting.

2. Analyse survey data using the relevant discrete choice modelling techniques

3. Design choice experiment attitudinal surveys for public and industry stakeholders

4. Conduct focus group research and analysis of relevant stakeholders

5. Collaborate with relevant project partners for data collection and modelling

6. Prepare periodic and final reports of findings.

Additional Duties:

In addition to the tasks listed above, the successful candidate will:

1. Prepare abstracts, journal articles, policy briefs and presentations for dissemination of the work in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, international conferences and relevant industry symposium.

2. Assist in the operation of the research group by helping with the following: (i), day-to-day management, and liason with partners and NUIG staff as required (iii) writing research funding applications.

3. Work independently to ensure the successful completion of the work and their development as an academic researcher.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

•Hold a PhD in a relevant research area (e.g. Energy Economics/Environmental Economics/Economics) •Strong publication record as a senior author in peer-reviewed journal papers.

•Have proven experience in the use of discrete choice modelling techniques and

econometric modelling software, e.g., Excel, NGene, Stata, NLogit

•Demonstrable expertise in the design and implementation of stated preference surveys and

•Be able to conduct focus group and participatory research and analysis

•Expertise in financial appraisal and real options analysis

Desirable Requirements:

•Have experience in writing research funding applications.

•Have experience in project and/or research group management.

•Have experience in engaging with stakeholders involved in the hydrogen and battery storage and renewable energy industry

Salary: €38,632 to €45,942 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from 04th January 2022
