Babraham Institute

Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Biological Chemistry

The Babraham Institute is a charity which is world renowned for its research in life sciences to enhance lives and improve wellbeing.

A Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is available for candidates interested in studying the changes which occur in connective tissue as we age, particularly the collagen and elastin components.

Following up on our recent exciting findings that collagen chemically changes dynamically when stretched, we are applying this knowledge to understand better the impact of changing crosslinking profiles that develop with age. We believe that there is much more to understand in order to provide clarity as to what the most important factors are which lead to the tissues in healthy people to age.

Through the use of modern analytical and biochemical techniques, composition and chemical changes key to the ageing of connective tissue will be identified, and the importance and control of these processes studied. Examples of our recent work can be found at DOI:10.1074/jbc.RA119.011031 and DOI: 10.1074/jbc.RA119.012067 .

The ideal candidate should have a good knowledge of and experience in biochemistry and must have previously studied Biological chemistry or Biochemistry as their first degree and enjoy working across a range of disciplines, some of which may at first be un-familiar.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a biochemical /biological subject. Experience in handling and preparing biological samples for biochemical analysis and imaging as well as experience in cell culture and handling human tissues at Containment level II are desirable. Experience in mass spectroscopy of biological compounds is desirable but not necessary as training can be provided when required.

We would welcome applications from candidates returning to work after a career break.

This is a limited term appointment with funding for this post expected to be available for a period of 12 months
