The University of Edinburgh

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Grade 7 (£34,304 – £40,927)

Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh

Full time (35 hours per week)

Fixed Term: 30 months

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

The mammalian and host-pathogen genomics groups at the Roslin Institute are looking for a research fellow to join our inter-disciplinary team to use state-of-the-art gene editing and functional genomics approaches to functionally map the impact of cattle genetic variants on gene regulation and disease. The fellow will use the genome-wide massively parallel reporter assay (MPRA), CRISPR/Cas9, and single-cell screening approaches to characterise the variants driving important cattle phenotypes and investigate their mode of action. The researcher will benefit from being part of a wider inter-disciplinary group of wet- and dry-lab researchers working on both human and livestock genomics. With the Roslin institute being one of the world’s leading livestock research institutes and a member of the Centre for Tropical Livestock Research Institute, the applicant will have access to a range of resources, training opportunities and core expertise.

The position will be on grade 7 (salary above) and is available initially for 30 months.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Musa Hassan (Musa.Hassan@roslin.ed.ac.uk) and Dr James Prendergast (james.prendergast@roslin.ed.ac.uk).

Please apply with your CV and a cover letter outlining your suitability for the role addressing the criteria set out in the skills section.

Your skills and attributes for success:

Essential skills:

• A PhD in a relevant discipline in molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or similar.

• Previous work experience in a laboratory and superior skills in basic molecular biological methods such as cloning, sterile cell culture, and PCR.

• Knowledge and experience with RNA/DNA modification methods, preferably with some working experience with CRISPR/Cas9.

• Ability to quickly learn and independently apply new techniques after initial training

• Exceptional organizational and time management skills and computer literacy for the recording and communication of results.

Desired skills:

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with a variety of scientists at all levels.

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and workloads.
