Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 7, salary £31,406.

Full Time - Fixed Term Contract until 31st October 2022

Background

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge in the area of the management, integration, and system-wide rail systems simulation. The successful applicant will sit within the data management and simulation team of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE).

Summary of Role

  Deliver technical work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to the development of new research projects

  Operate primarily within the area of railway systems simulation

  Analyse and interpret research findings and results

  Contribute to generation of research funding

  Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, in the field of creation and analysis of railway simulation systems, with assistance of a mentor if required

  Design, develop and carry out data analysis using the tools provided as part of the UKRRIN research data platform, on behalf of the UKRRIN stakeholders

  Assist with the day to day management of technicians working on simulation systems

  Contribute to writing bids for research funding

  Analyse and interpret data

  Apply knowledge thus gained in a way which develops new intellectual understanding

  Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc

  Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

  Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods

  Undertake management/administration arising from research

  Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration

  Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader

  Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews

  Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

  Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

  Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification

  First degree in a STEM discipline and a higher degree in an appropriate subject. Ideally, you will hold a PhD in an area relevant to creation and analysis of simulation systems

  Fluency in the techniques and methodologies used in large-scale industrial data analysis, and the skills to contribute to the development of new approaches in response to industry challenges

  High level analytical capability

  Ability to communicate complex information clearly, including demonstrable experience of presenting at academic conferences, industry meetings, and public outreach events

  Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

  Demonstrable ability to contribute to the planning and organisation of the programme of research to be delivered using simulation tools

  Experience of co-ordinating own work and ability to manage work of assigned technicians, ensuring effective collaboration with the wider team and avoiding conflicts of interest or duplication of research effort
