The Post-doctoral (PDF) Researcher will develop/design, pursue funding for, implement and publish research studies related to research on research (RoR) and evidence-based practice with a specific focus on measuring research impact in the context of a national funding agency. (Principal Investigator: Professor Karim Khan). This position requires a strong research background, excellent writing skills and the ability to initiate work and execute tasks independently. The PDF Researcher will regularly communicate with co-investigators and community stakeholders.

Dr. Khan’s research program is based at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility (CHHM). CHHM is a University of British Columbia Senate-approved organization affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. The research centre improves the lives of Canadians by decreasing the burden of arthritis and fall-related fractures. The Centre’s research focuses on prevention, detection, and improved treatment of bone and joint diseases so that Canadians can enjoy the freedom that comes with mobility.

The successful candidate will:

•Lead an area of scientific research often referred to broadly as ‘Research on Research (RoR)’ or meta-research in the health domain. The candidate needs to have expertise in scientific research methods and the field of human relations (HR) and organizational behaviour because of the element of team dynamics/team science in the research area. The candidate needs to demonstrate the ability to work with research partners (including funding agencies) to obtain data. The candidate needs exceptional interpersonal skills to foster a community of collaborators nationally and internationally via platforms such as Zoom in this field.

•The candidate will need to foster Vancouver-based and provincial (e.g. Sauder School of Business, Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research), national (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research) and international (e.g., Wellcome Trust) partnerships.

•Design and implement research studies and related programs, including planning, managing and handling communications for research projects;

•Identify research synergies and create opportunities for new avenues of research;

•Set priorities and goals, and forecast study requirements;

•Write and submit grant applications;

•Write and submit manuscripts;

•Ensure high quality study governance which will include accurately documenting research processes from application to approval stages and final reports, and ensuring that responsible research staff are meeting all requirements at all institutional levels;

•Manage regulatory documentation around study approval, amendments and renewal process;

•Write ethical review applications and review protocols, agreements and contracts for ethical integrity and accuracy;

•Gather, review and synthesize relevant literature;

•Develop knowledge translation (KT) strategies for dissemination of results;

•Organize and lead research team meetings;

•Design data analysis plans;

•Analyse data and interpret findings;

•Provide expertise in the area of health research related to evidence-based practice, the science of research funding and the emerging field of ‘journalology’

•Engage regularly with graduate trainees.

This position requires research experience, excellent communication skills, tact, judgment and discretion in working with various senior professionals and collaborating with internal and external agencies. Knowledge, awareness, confidence and sensitivity to personal data and other issues are required. Errors in decision making may compromise the reputation of the Principal Investigator, CHHM, the research team and their collaborators and stakeholders.

Supervision received

This position works with wide latitude under the general direction of Dr. Karim Khan and alongside a Senior Research Associate. The candidate will receive guidance from a major leader in the field who is based in Ontario (remote partner).

Supervision given

Provides direction and content knowledge and experience to trainees (provides mentorship) and the larger research team. May manage staff.

Qualifications

•PhD in a relevant discipline such as public health or public policy.

•Experienced in quantitative data analysis with statistical software OR

•Experienced in qualitative data collection (interviews, focus groups, etc.) and analysis

•Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

•Proven experience (publications) in research relevant to research impact evaluation.

•Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.

•Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

•Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
