Postdoctoral Fellow - Vascular Dysfunction In SARS-CoV-2

European Molecular Biology Laboratory

Postdoctoral Fellow - Vascular dysfunction in SARS-CoV-2 Location: Barcelona, Spain

Staff Category: Postdoctoral Fellow Contract Duration: 2 years Grading: Postdoc stipend 2.719 EUR Closing Date: 16 July 2021 Reference Number: BA00059

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The newest EMBL site is being established in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), one of the largest infrastructures in Southern Europe dedicated to translational research. The Haase and Bernabeu groups have a common interest in developing tissue-specific 3D in vitro vascular models that recapitulate vascular development and remodeling in health and disease. Our unique tissue- engineering approaches allow us to generate human microvessels with in vivo- like characteristics. As such, these systems are particularly useful for investigating infectious disease in the circulation - which is a critical barrier to transport throughout other tissues. Given the strong evidence of vascular dysfunction occurring in severe cases of COVID-19, we aim to use our models to investigate infection and transport mechanisms of the virus in human microvasculature on-chip. This project will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Javier MartínezPicado (IrsiCaixa), an expert in retroviruses, who has recently led multiple SARS-CoV-2 projects. Overall, we aim to identify the viral and host factors that trigger vascular dysfunction in COVID-19 and virus translocation from the blood to the parenchyma.

Your role

The successful candidate will assess virus-associated vessel inflammation and dysfunction. You will examine viral replication in endothelial cells and the stroma, and assess alterations in vascular barrier function. For this, you will develop a lung 3D microvascular model with methodology developed in the Haase lab. In addition, you will assess the impact of cytokine storm and inflammation on the propensity for virus transport to the parenchyma with a high-throughput impedance system and the 3D vessel system. Finally, you will screen potential treatments targeting the endothelium and antivirals. In this project, you will receive ample support from lab members in the Haase, Bernabeu and Martínez-Picado groups regarding both experimental and data analyses.

You have

A PhD in biology or bioengineering, preferably in fields related to vascular biology, viral pathogenesis or inflammation. Strong experience in tissue culture (3D is a plus), molecular biology techniques and quantitative imaging. Strong interest in infectious disease in humans. Independent and motivated work habits and excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (Spanish or Catalan is a plus, but not necessary).

You might also have

Experience in 3D tissue engineering and/or microfabrication. Experience in advanced image analysis or computational skills. Experience working in BSL3 conditions. You enjoy working in a collaborative environment with interdisciplinary teams. Enthusiasm to tackle this multi-group and multi- institute project together with us and a potential private industrial partner.
