Job Description

Job Purpose

A Postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Xi Chen, Assistant Professor and CPRIT scholar in cancer research at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and NCI designated Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine.  The Chen lab studies the function and mechanism of Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) protein quality control machinery in cancer progression, metastasis and therapy resistance, with special focus on cancer immunotherapy. Our long-term goals is to elucidate the significance and mechanisms of ER proteostasis in cancer progression, metastasis and therapy resistance, and developing mechanism-based novel therapies to overcome therapy resistance and transform cancer to a manageable chronic disease. Our recent study revealed an unprecedented role of the IRE1a/XBP1 branch of the UPR in mediating tumor homeostasis and therapy resistance. We have developed a mechanism-based combination therapy with the IRE1a RNase inhibitor and docetaxel that completely eradicated the primary patient-derived breast tumors, prevented recurrence and triggered robust immune response. This study has led to an clinical trial. The highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment of our group provides unique career development opportunities for the postdoc trainees.
