  Job Description

  UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES, DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW, POSITION #00024672

  The Porter laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BSc), School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), University of North Dakota (UND), is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the area of neuropharmacology. The identified individual will be responsible for characterizing the inflammatory profiles associated with crucial epigenetically-regulated genes and connected signaling pathways in brain immune cells, which are known contributors in the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Translational knowledge obtained from these studies would be clinically significant for uncovering novel diagnostic biomarkers of early stage PD or the identification of potential therapeutic targets that constitute the as yet unknown underlying cause of this debilitating disease.

  Compensation and Appointment:

  Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow,

  Remuneration / Salary: up to $45,000/year + benefits commensurate with qualifications

  This position is a twelve (12) month, non-tenure track, special appointment with University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), Department of Biomedical Sciences.

  Job Summary and Responsibilities:

  The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration between a group of Department Faculty members interested in utilizing immunological, biochemical and systems pharmacological approaches to investigate novel mechanisms of neurodegeneration. The identified Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for performing the experimental procedures for the following three major research activities. (1) Isolation and quality assessment of microglia from transgenic animal models; (2) Simultaneous mRNA and DNA extraction from isolated microglia for gene expression and methylation analysis using deep-sequencing techniques; and (3) Profiling of bioactive compounds secreted from isolated microglia using Fluorescent Multiplexed Bead-Based Immunoassay (FMIA) and Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) techniques. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also be responsible for communicating the results of these activities through manuscript publications and presentations at scientific meetings. Finally, the identified Fellow is also expected to constructively interact with Faculty, Staff, and Students within the Department and SMHS.

  Minimum Requirements:

  • Possess a recent Ph.D (6 years ago or less). or equivalent terminal degree in neuroscience, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, cell biology, or related discipline.

  • Research experience in at least one of the following areas: murine models of disease, molecular biology or signal transduction.

  • Minimum of one first (or co-first) author peer-reviewed journal publication.

  • Submission of (1) a full Curriculum Vitae that includes education or other academic appointments, complete publication record and research skills listed in detail, (2) the contact information of three references, (3) a PDF copy of the most representative publication of the applicant’s previous research, and (4) a statement of research interest.

  Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete complex research programs.

  • Proficiency in scientific oral and written communication.

  • Experience with multiparameter flow cytometry or mass spectrometry analysis.

  • Familiarity with bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput datasets.
