  Job Description

The Arizona Center for Mathematical Sciences, a research center of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona seeks applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate working in the research group of Dr. Jerome V Moloney. The Center is housed in the College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Successful candidates will have a strong background in theoretical/laser physics, numerical analysis and large scale computing in electromagnetics. Suitable candidates should have wide exposure to parallel computing with mixed shared and distributed memory hardware. The class of research problems under study present challenges in intense laser pulse simulation, intense field photoionization of molecules and coupling of light to nonlinear nanostructures.

The postdoc will work in a multi-disciplinary team of applied mathematicians, theoretical physicists and experimental optical scientists. Although the problems under study have their origins in Optics, the behaviors of the pulses have manifestations in many areas of continuum physics so this position affords a unique opportunity for an entry-level scientist who wants to tackle some of the outstanding current challenges in nonlinear science.

The College of Optical Sciences supports the UA’s diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiatives designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The candidate is expected to support diversity and inclusiveness efforts in the department and college.

The successful candidate will perform research in one of the areas of:

Extreme nonlinear optics in the atmosphere and in condensed media.

Develop quantum based materials models to source full field E.M solvers

Nanoscale nonlinear interaction of light pulses – with 2D TMDC materials.

Perform independent studies in assigned research area.

  Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Theoretical Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related field.

  Strong electromagnetics background

  Strong computational science background.

Effective writing skills for publication of articles in scientific research journals.

Experience with modern computer parallelization methodologies.

  Effective communication skills.
