Two Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions in Microbial Ecology & Microbiology

Marine Biological Association of the UK - MYCO-CARB Project

  Location:Plymouth

  Salary:£24,285 to £28,936

  Hours:Full Time

  Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract

  Closes:7th January 2019

The Marine Biological Association (MBA) is an independent research institute carrying out leading-edge research in fundamental and strategic areas of marine biology. We are looking for two highly motivated and independently working postdoctoral research scientists with interests in microbial ecology and microbiology to be part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded MYCO-CARB project. The MYCO-CARB project will combine complementary methodologies to determine the underpinning biological machinery and ecological roles of marine fungi, including establishing their importance in the marine carbon cycle.

Applicants should have a PhD and a strong conceptual and practical background in microbial ecology and/or microbiology. The successful candidate will undertake research using a range of contemporary tools to explore the diversity and functional roles of marine fungi. Experience in some of following areas will be an advantage: collecting and processing seawater for RNA/DNA-based microbial diversity assessment, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), application of isotope-based tools (e.g. stable isotope probing, PFLA analysis), cultivation of microorganisms, enzyme/protein analysis, microscopy (e.g. confocal laser scanning microscopy), proteomics and transcriptomics with associated bioinformatics.

Specific experience with fungi or marine microbes is not essential.

The roles could include research cruises in the UK and overseas. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory. The posts are available for 1 year initially with extension to 2023. The candidate must be eligible to work in the UK. Salary range £24,285 to £28,936.

Informal enquiries are strongly encouraged via Dr Michael Cunliffe (micnli@mba.ac.uk).

  Application Process

Applicants for the position should send a CV (including brief description of research interests, background, previous employment and publication list) and contact details for at least two references to hr@mba.ac.uk (marked MYCO-CARB Postdoc). The deadline for applications is 7th January 2019. Interviews will take place in late January. The successful candidate would be expected to be in post as soon as possible.
