Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Theoretical Physics x2

  Salary/Grade: £34,189 to £39,609 Per Annum – Grade 7

The Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Plymouth (UoP) is offering two postdoctoral positions in theoretical physics, starting in November 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter (but not later than Feb 2019).

The posts are both for 2 years. You will undertake research on a range of topics in quantum field theory in electromagnetic backgrounds (e.g. strong field QED, intense laser-matter interactions, trident and Schwinger pair production). The work will be mainly analytical, although there is scope for employing numerical techniques. Some part of the project may be spent with our collaborating institution in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Theoretical Physics group at UoP comprises 9 members of staff, as well as postdocs and research students. Research interests in the group include QFT in external fields, laser-matter interactions in the relativistic and quantum regime, BSM physics, lightfront field theory, worldline techniques, infra-red degeneracies in QFT, effective field theory and lattice QCD.

For more information about our research see: http://math-sciences.org/

Applicants must have a PhD, or equivalent, in physics or a related discipline, and research experience in theoretical or high-energy physics. Previous experience with external field problems in QFT is desirable but not essential.

You should submit a Curriculum Vitae (max 2 pages, including a link to a full publication list) and a statement of research interests (max 2 pages).

You should arrange for 2 letters of recommendation to be sent by email to Dr Anton Ilderton (anton.ilderton@plymouth.ac.uk) prior to the deadline. All applications though must be made through the online system.

For an informal discussion to find out more about the roles then please contact Anton Ilderton anton.ilderton@plymouth.ac.uk or Ben King by emailb.king@plymouth.ac.uk

There are full-time positions working 37 hours per week on a fixed term basis due tot the nature of the funding.

Closing Date: Midnight Wednesday 17thOctober 2018

Interviews are likely to take place on Tuesday 23rd October 2018 and you will be notified if you have been shortlisted or not.

We offer a competitive salary package and a generous pension and holiday scheme. We also offer a range of other benefits, including ongoing development opportunities.

The University of Plymouth is committed to equality of opportunity, promoting a diverse and inclusive culture, demonstrated through our commitment to the gender equality Athena SWAN Charter and as a Stonewall diversity champion. All applications will be judged solely on merit, however, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in the workforce, for example black and minority ethnic groups.

University of Plymouth holds a TEF (Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework) Silver by the Office for Students.
