  TWO INI POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

  INI FELLOWSHIP IN NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH

  The Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI), part of the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, seeks talented postdoctoral scientists to engage in cutting-edge neuroscience research. The INI was established in January 2017, supported by a transformational $45 million grant to the University of Iowa from The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Led by Director Ted Abel, Ph.D., the INI is a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary neuroscience center spanning 5 colleges and 26 departments, dedicated to finding the causes of — and preventions, treatments, and cures for — the many diseases that affect the brain and nervous system. Successful candidates will join a strong cohort of postdoctoral fellows working in the field of neuroscience, such as those participating in the NIH-funded INSPIRE program. The University of Iowa Postdoctoral Association provides a variety of social and professional development opportunities on campus.

  Fellows will be assisted in finding a match with one of over 100 INI faculty mentors, in whose laboratory they will conduct mentored research. Fellows will gain facility with cutting-edge technologies and experimental approaches to the study of the nervous system, both in its normal functioning and its dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric disorders. Faculty mentors, their laboratory personnel, and fellow INI scientists will provide a rich training environment, helping fellows to acquire skill in study design, statistical analysis, translational and clinical teamwork, grant writing, and manuscript preparation. This training will provide the successful candidate with an outstanding skill set for a career as an independent scientist in a wide variety of academic and industry environments. Fellows also will be provided with their own research fund, which they can utilize for travel to meetings, necessary reagents, or a small piece of crucial equipment.

  INI faculty work on a broad range of neuroscience questions, including but not limited to: neuromodulation; formation and function of neural circuits; neurogenetics; and the etiology and cellular and molecular mechanisms of disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and depression. Core facilities of the INI and the Carver College of Medicine provide cutting-edge instrumentation and support for mouse behavioral studies (the Neural Circuits and Behavior Core), fMRI (the Iowa Magnetic Resonance Facility with 3T and 7T scanners), transcranial magnetic stimulation, proteomics, genomics (the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics), microscopy (the Central Microscopy Research Facility), and optogenetics.

  Requirements: Successful applicants will hold a recent (0-3 years) Ph.D. degree in neuroscience or a related field, a record of academic excellence and research productivity as evidenced by high-quality, impactful publications, and a strong desire to pursue independent neuroscience research as a career.   INI INTEGRATED RESEARCH AND TEACHING FELLOWSHIP

  The Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI), part of the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, seeks talented postdoctoral scientists for a combined research and teaching fellowship position. This three-year fellowship will combine a mentored postdoctoral research position in the laboratory of one of the INI’s over 100 INI faculty mentors, with a teaching position supporting the University of Iowa’s new undergraduate major in Neuroscience, a joint program of the Department of Biology and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. This dual training fellowship will provide the successful candidate with an outstanding skill set for a career as an independent scientist/educator at a wide variety of academic institutions.

  Teaching: Fellows will have the opportunity to design and teach new neuroscience courses, as well as contribute to existing courses, in support of the University of Iowa’s undergraduate major in Neuroscience (approximately 50% teaching time in years 1 and 2; 25% in year 3). The fellow will receive training in classroom pedagogy and course design from experienced faculty mentors in the Department of Biology and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, and through programs and courses offered by the University of Iowa’s Center for Teaching. Funds will be available to support fellows’ travel to a meeting, course, or seminar on pedagogical approaches in the sciences.

  Requirements: Successful applicants will hold a recent (0-3 years) Ph.D. degree in neuroscience or a related field, a record of research excellence and productivity as evidenced by high-quality, impactful publications, experience with teaching undergraduates as a teaching assistant or course contributor, and a strong desire to integrate neuroscience research and teaching in a future academic career.
