Postdoctoral Research Assistant : Dundee, United Kingdom

SLSC0446: Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Grade 7 (£31,604 – £38,833)

The School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee is a world-class academic institution with a reputation for the excellence of its research, its high quality teaching and student experience, and the strong impact of its activities outside academia. With 900 staff from over 60 countries worldwide the School provides a dynamic, multi-national, collegiate and diverse environment with state-of-the-art laboratory, technology and teaching facilities.

Threonine ubiquitination and axon degeneration

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the lab of Dr Satpal Virdee to continue work on an E3 ligase (MYCBP2) that positively regulates an axon destructive signalling pathway. Many neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, may converge on this pathway hence therapeutic modulation of MYCBP2 may have great potential. Our recent biochemical and structural characterisation of MYCBP2 has revealed that it is a unique class of E3 ligase with apparent selectivity for non-lysine amino acids (Nature 2018). This exciting project will involve developing primary neuron models of MYCBP2 E3 inactivation and establish the effect on axon degeneration. The candidate will also contribute to the development of state-of-the-art methodology for identifying non-lysine ubiquitinated substrates by mass spectrometry. This will establish the cellular targets of MYCBP2, the ubiquitination sites, and role of non-lysine ubiquitination in Wallerian axon degeneration. Experience in neuroscience is required. Training will be provided for other aspects. The successful applicant will benefit from working in a multidisciplinary lab with excellent career development opportunity. The MRC-PPU is equipped to the highest international standards. For further details, please consult http://www.ppu.mrc.ac.uk

Candidate requirements:
- PhD, with outstanding academic track record and at least one first authored publication (or on track to publish) in an internationally recognized journal.
- Enthusiasm for multidisciplinary science
- Capable of working in a team, but able to plan and work independently.
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language.

MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (PPU):
This project will be performed in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU), based within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The MRC-PPU is in a beautiful location overlooking the estuary of the River Tay and embedded within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee which is one of the premier Life Sciences research centres in the world.

The position is available immediately. The appointment will be made on the University of Dundee postdoctoral salary Grade 7 scale plus superannuation with initial placement depending on achievements and experience, but will be up to £33,574, (Spinal Point 32).

This contract is for a fixed term period of 3 years with the possibility of extension.

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 28, £30,688).
