Research Associate in Fluid Mechanics

Cardiff University - Cardiff School of Engineering

We seek to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated scientist with proven intellectual and technical abilities to lead challenging research into theoretical and modelling aspects of the Turbulent/non-Turbulent interface in jets and plumes. The work will be part of a 3-year research project supported by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the framework of a “Programme Grant.” With the researcher appointed in the partner university Imperial College to work on this programme, he/she will have an opportunity to work within a multi-institution, multidisciplinary team which spans both basic/applied sciences and engineering and involves collaborations with three industrial partners (HR Wallingford, Gexcon AS, ESI Group). Additionally, the project will involve collaboration with University of Rome “La Sapienza” and with University of Bologna.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will undertake research in the dynamics of jets and plumes. More specifically, the RA will be asked to analyse data obtained with a state of the art numerical simulation of jets and plumes performed by the group at the Imperial College. He/she will apply a recently developed post-processing tool based on the Karman-Howarth and Yaglom equations for the second order structure functions to develop a scale by scale description of the physical processes occurring across the interface. By using a priori coarse-graining, he/she will refine novel subgrid models that are scale-aware and test them against new physically relevant benchmarks, such as plumes/jets in turbulent environments and in cross-flows, to ensure that the SGS models will be suitable for use in practice.

Applicants must hold a Postgraduate degree at PhD level in Fluid Mechanics or equivalent. Please include a cover letter, CV (including any publication, preprint or work in progress), and a short research statement.
